Harry Potter Scarf

Peering intently from his wire-rim glasses, the actor Daniel Radcliffe who portrays “Harry Potter” is now such a familiar image that we feel he is “one of the family.” Every aspect of Harry has been duplicated whenever possible. This includes the wonderful scarf of gold and scarlet, which also happen to be the colors of Gryffindor, Harry’s home at Hogwarts School of Wizardry.

For those of us who wish to use it, a replication pattern is available online. However, it should be noted that the stitches are not the same, and therefore, the scarf has a very different look. The online version features a woven pattern achieved with yarn and straws. While the resulting stripe pattern may be intact, the end result is a far cry from the actual “Potter” scarf, as it is narrow and not tubular, which probably results in a problem getting the scarf to lie flat on its wearer.

The officially licensed version of Harry’s scarf is available online, for a very reasonable price. Duplicated in acrylic and by knitting machine, it comes very close to the actual wardrobe item. Knitters everywhere may recognize the actual stitch used as the “stockinette” stitch, in an alternating stripe pattern. It also appears to be tubular, meaning that it has no “wrong side.” A fringe of gold and scarlet and the sewn on Gryffindor crest completes this item.

Although it is the official “Harry” scarf, it differs dramatically from the striped pattern used for the official “Gryffindor” scarf. The tubular construction and stockinette stitch are the same, but the bulk of the scarf is scarlet, with a small four gold and maroon stripe pattern at each end and maroon fringe. The Gryffindor crest is also sewn onto this item as well. In fact, if searching online, you can find a hat and gloves to match.
